There is a multitude of combinations of settings. What are you primarily shooting. This does make a difference in how you proceed. For my wildlife and sports shooting I started with the Sports Illustrated settings which you can download and then tweaked from there. From the day I got my MKII I have shot nothing but RAW and always recommend this. Even for those occasions where I shoot 400-500 images I still do this.

This does make the post processing a little more time consuming but well worth it, IMO. I don't believe that there is one set of settings that is a 'fit all'. The best thing to do is to start to play with the various settings and then review the shots. Of course, moving the focus to the * button is a no brainer and is the first thing that I do with a camera.
