In my case, I was in a horrible jam (no pun intended) with my 2007 Canon Imagerunner (50,000 copies, purchased new by me) which had previously been displaying the ‘003’ error code indicating a much more serious problem (fuser) and subsequently turning itself off while printing, or not allowing a complete start up, all of which was causing me horrific problems at my busiest time of the year as I’m in the tax business and have unbelievable deadlines. My copier is the backbone of my business, not to mention scanning, pdf and fax. I almost fell victim to an ‘independent’ operator who had me sold on a refurbished Sharp machine for $4,500! He came here three times at $175/call and tried fixing this code the machine was throwing by checking the fuser, cleaning the machine and taking a few electronic meter readings. Each time the machine worked for a very short time thereafter then started throwing the code again and not working.
I had him come one last time. He miraculously got it working again and I relegated myself to a paperless existence using only fax and pdf to exist by while I decided what the heck to do about my copier issue. So many options to explore and no time. It got so bad that I had to take a flash drive to Kinkos in order to print something.
It was awful. Although the independent seemed to know his business and was very personable, he is after all a Sharp dealer and hence never once ran through this keystroke process you’ve outlined above. I don’t know if I was getting scammed or not but he claimed that Canon’s were garbage, my machine was worthless and I needed to buy a Sharp. I do not like the idea of unnecessarily spending $4,500, especially in today’s economy! Unfortunately it was beginning to look like my only option.
Subsequently I ran into an old high school friend who (talk about a small world) is a senior Canon tech and he ran me through these codes on the phone. The machine worked fine thereafter. I was absolutely amazed, not only that this simple process is part of the machine but that this local copier fix-it man who was here several times had no clue about this process.
The other thing my old friend told me that my 2007 Imagerunner 33801 is one of his favorite machines and I should in no way part with it and the machine will serve me for years to come. Obviously the day will come when a fuser will have to be purchased and installed and ultimately a new copier purchase, but fortunately that is not today. So I discovered these keystroke reset codes from my friend a couple of weeks ago. Problem solved, life is good. Until late last night, when I’m printing out a boatload of reports which are due Monday, and the machine SHUTS DOWN AGAIN -throwing me that same darn error code! I can’t find where I wrote the codes given to me by my old friend and I was completely freaking out at 10 pm the night before Easter. It’s too late to call anyone and I did not know what to do.
Somehow today, Easter Sunday, I thought maybe, just maybe I can come up with something on a search. I remembered something about pressing a star button and the number 28, that’s it. Thanks to google and question-defense.com I am resurrected from a bad situation. The funny thing is that today it was a paper jam causing the problem!
I don’t know why that code got thrown again (although now I know how to fix it for sure) but it was a single piece of paper which was jammed on the right hand side door all of which was directed to me by my handy color screen on my faithful Canon Imagerunner. This is wonderful, especially considering the metaphorical meaning of this Easter day! I’m back in business. YA-HOO All kidding aside, does anyone have any add’l information or suggestions on my machine to share, i.e. Recommendations for finding the right kind of service person, frequency of service (only about 10,000 copies/year), the best way to replace the fuser when it finally goes out or to buy good quality toner without getting ripped off and any other helpful information for this small businessman?
